Hi its Radim from Rocadog, Have you ever had a problem to distinguish Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu? Well you are not alone. I had the same problem as well, so i decided, to find out what are the key differences between them. The reason why they look similar is, that Shih Tzu is direct descendant of Lhasa Apso.
The main difference in their appearance is their size. Shih tzu is smaller. According to breed standards – Shih Tzu is 20 – 25 cm tall and weighs around 5 or 6 kgs. On the other hand Lhasa Apso height is between 25-30 cms and weighs up to 8 kgs. This is not that big difference, but if you will see Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso face to face, you can be almost always sure, that the bigger one is Lhasa Apso.
Both breeds have long, beautifull and fluffy coat. And their coat is probably their biggest difference and the easiest way to tell the breeds apart. If you will see side parting of the coat and you the coat is straight with black tips on muzzle and ears you can be sure, that it is Lhasa Apso. Shih Tzu does not have the dividing line and their coat is much more wavier.
Its hard to tell them apart based on their face. But Lhasa Apso have narrower head, longer muzzle and smaller eyes. Shih Tzu face is more flat and their eyes are larger and rounder.
Both dogs can be characterized as affectionate, loving dogs with average intelligence. They does not require much exercise, since their energy level is low to medium. Both can be described as non shedding – sometimes they are good for people with allergies and neither of these dogs drool. They dont have herding, hunting or fighting instincts.
But there is one big differrence in their personality, which is connected to their purpose in history. Lhasa Apso dogs were bred as watchdogs, while Shih tzu were bred as companions. This was thousand year ago, but you cant change their personality completely. This is why Shih Tzu is friendly and trusting towards everyone. But Lhasa Apso is more independent and they are suspicious towards strangers. Lhasa Apso can be decribed as watchdog, guard or protector, while Shih Tzu is typical companion dog.
Tell me in comment, if you are more Shih Tzu or Lhasa Apso person. I hope it will be little bit easier for you to tell them apart.
